Geoffrey Bardon a school teacher in the
Northern Territory is credited with being the first person to assist the
Indigenous Australians in bringing their art to the market place in the
early 1960's.
The original Artists were a small group at Papunya. The domino effect that
took place after these people began painting their original "DreamTime"
paintings is legendary. In the short space of forty years a thriving
industry has been created that has swept its way across the international
art world.
The names Papunya Tula, Kiwirrkura, Kintore, Balgo, Utopia, Uluru, and
many others are no longer strange places, but revered sites of original
paintings, that many people now know about, and discuss the virtues of the
artists from each of these areas. Exhibitions in New York, Berlin, Paris,
Berne, and Geneva are now a common occurrence with many of the artists
travelling internationally to promote their work.
Although this was the birthplace of the aboriginal art movement like all
living entities it did not take long to migrate to the coastlines and
other areas. Their success has encouraged Aboriginal artists Australia
wide to bring their art to the world.
As all movements change with the generations this art form is proving no
exception. It is exciting to see the new styles being developed by the
young whilst not compromising on the themes and basic beliefs that are
part of their culture.
