Bejewelled Creations
For as far back into my childhood as I can remember, I was the 'family
jeweller'. My Mother, my Aunts and others would all bring their tangled
jewellery to me to untangle and fix. Little did I know back then
that this was the unfolding of a life long passion to work with metals,
gemstones and crystals.
As a child I always had to
be making something, it did not matter what, only that I would create.
As I grew I turned my hands to many things, sewing pottery, millinery,
pattern making painting and many other creative fields along the way.
However none seemed to catch my attention or enthusiasm more than the
field of jewellery. It was no surprise then, that I endeavoured to learn
all I could as a young woman just out of high school, working for three
manufacturing jewellery companies in New Zealand before moving to
Australia.
In everything I ventured
into I found certain things to remain the same, working with colour,
proportion, fluidity, style and the balance of all these things to
create the final treasure. I developed a keen eye for detail and beauty
regardless of the object, and drew ideas from everything around me.
Wether that was the style and materials chosen for an interesting
building, I found myself studying in the street or simply sitting in a
cafe and observing the decor. I was my passion as a school leaver and
still is today more than twenty years later.
I am at my happiest when I
am creating, whether it be a crystal wand, beading an exquisite suite of
jewellery, creating a single pair of earrings or simply putting together
a beautiful beaded pendulum. There's a timeless almost magical space at
my work bench where wonderful creations unfold. They take on an energy
and an identity all of their own and before long find their way to whom
they belong.
