MAAYKEN

Maayken is an every day sculpture poet. She grew up in Amsterdam, once upon a time, but she belongs to Australia, it is her home. Her work is the outcome of a long search to combine her talents into one product, welding poetry with three dimensional form.

Maayken studied Art and Design at the Bendigo Institute of TAFE, Kingaroy Institute of TAFE and self designed research on paper making, paper sculpture, papier-mâché, pastel work and calligraphy.

Since 1984 she has won many prizes and commissions for her work which is to be found in many private collection both in Australia and overseas. To mould her expression Maayken turns her tuning knob to her inner space, dips her hands into her chaos to identify form, while she remains in awe of this universe within her. Her work breathes her thanks giving for this companion.

Artists Statement;
"Compelled to give form to what I perceive within, windows open and through my involvement texture, colour and sound appear. It is a miracle I have always known.

New forms become an intimate strokeable part of me. Each form is set free again to uniform and thus retain its life, its chrysalis remains in what has been created. In this way I can bear, feel and see what I did not know I knew.

My products are environments, an interactive art form combining form with poetry. The interaction between form, colour and poetry becomes the communication with those who experience the work through touch, feeling, thought and sound, adding their own windows to the room with many views within. An environment is never finished,

Sometimes I look at the Milky Way and knowing its depth is the edge of our universe, my forms and colours, my words and I are very small, yet important. It makes me smile."
