Mary Kios
Born Adelaide South Aust.
I have a background that was totally food oriented and have owned and
operated a corporate functions catering company and coffee shop for the last
32 years.
Back in 1986 I took a course in jewellery making at the goldsmiths school as
a hobby. this hobby became a passion that eventuated in changing my
lifestyle.
I found a whole new world of learning and exploring, not only with the noble
metals , but with all the wonderful gems and semi precious stones that go
into the making of beautiful and ornamental pieces.
I learned the art of crochet and embroidery as a child of
Greek migrant
parents for the purpose of embellishing practical household items such as
tablecloths doilies bedspreads etc.
As I progressed and acquired other skills my attention turned to jewellery
making and gem stone carving. while this has now become my main artistic
outlet I still play with other mediums and recently turned to crochet with
metal thread. first copper wire with its warmth of colour and pliability was
the medium I chose. Then I graduated to pure silver and embellishing this
with semi precious beads.
Design and making of especially commissioned pieces of jewellery are one of
my specialties, and I am happy to remodel old or damaged loved treasures.
I now have a gallery that has more than 60 local artists exhibiting and
selling their beautiful jewellery and other works of fine art. Their work
inspires me to develop and explore my own talents and to further my skills
in this field.
